Betula nigra

River Birch is a moderate sized tree with characteristic peeling bark in varying shades of white, orange, pink, and brown. These trees are typically found along river corridors and can tolerate moderately wet sites. River birch is most common in southeastern Minnesota but often does well when planted in northern Minnesota.

River birch is commonly planted for landscaping, shorelines, and wildlife. Seeds, buds, and catkins are eaten by wildlife.
