Envirothon
The Northern Area III Envirothon is an environmental competition for high school teams to challenge their environmental knowledge and problem solving skills.  Five learning stations are presented by natural resource professionals in the fields of water, wildlife, forestry, soils and a current environmental issue.  In addition, students will be asked to make a 10 minute oral presentation on the current event issue at a sixth station.  The 2011 current event topic is Salt and Fresh Water Estuaries.  The contest takes place in an outdoor setting.  Teams are composed of 4 to 5 students.  At each station, teams are given a short presentation and students must then answer 20 questions specific to that site.  Click here to view participants at the Wildlife Station.

The 17th Annual Northern Area III Envirothon will be held on Monday, May 2nd at 9:00 a.m. at Camp Chicagami in Eveleth, Minnesota.  Any student teams, grades 9-12, from high schools, home schools, or club organizations (4-H, Boy/Girl Scouts, etc.) in Northern Area III may participate.  Northern Area III consists of the northeastern Minnesota counties of Aitkin, Cook, Lake, and St. Louis.  Each team needs an adult advisor.  The school or organization is responsible for transportation to and from the event.  Winning teams receive medals and trophies and everyone receives a t-shirt for participating.

Congratulations to the  Mt. Iron Buhl High School team that placed third and competed in the State Envirothon on May 16th at Spirit Mountain!
